AR Plate, T-1, or Hardox: Choosing the Steel for Grinder Screens
When you buy a grinder screen, you are buying two things: a hole pattern and a steel. Operators sweat the hole size and skip the steel, then wonder why one screen lasts a season and another cracks in a month. The material — AR plate, T-1, or Hardox — decides whether your screen wears out gracefully or shatters on the first piece of tramp metal. Here is how to choose, and why harder is not always better.
First, clear up the Hardox confusion
Hardox is not a different kind of steel — it is a brand. Hardox is a Swedish mill (SSAB) that makes high-quality abrasion-resistant plate, and its products line up directly with the generic AR grades: Hardox 400 is essentially AR400, Hardox 450 is AR450, and so on. When someone insists on Hardox, they are usually paying for tighter quality consistency and reliable sourcing, not a fundamentally different metal. So the real decision is not "AR or Hardox" — it is which hardness grade, and whether you want the consistency premium of a name-brand plate.
The three grades by hardness
Steel hardness is measured in Brinell (BHN). For screens, the common options are:
- T-1 (~300 BHN): A high-strength structural steel. Softer than the AR grades, but tough and flexible. It bends and flexes under impact instead of cracking.
- AR400 / Hardox 400 (~360–440 BHN): The middle ground. Noticeably harder and longer-wearing than T-1, still workable.
- AR450 / Hardox 450 (~430–480 BHN): Harder again, longest wear life of the three, but the most brittle and the most expensive.
The hardness tradeoff nobody warns you about
Here is the rule that matters: the harder the steel, the more brittle it gets. More carbon buys wear resistance and costs you flexibility. A harder screen lasts longer against abrasion but is far more likely to crack — either when a chunk of tramp metal or a rock slams a spot, or during the rolling and forming the screen went through to be built in the first place.
That means the right steel depends less on how abrasive your material is and more on how hard your machine hits and how clean your feed is:
- High-horsepower grinders (roughly 850–1,200 HP) with contamination risk: Go with T-1. On a big machine grinding land-clearing debris, storm debris, or C&D wood where nails, spikes, and tramp metal are a fact of life, the flex of T-1 lets the screen survive impacts that would crack a hard AR plate. Trading some wear life for the machine not throwing screen fragments is the right call.
- Secondary grinders or clean, controlled feed: Go with AR400 / Hardox 400, or AR450 / Hardox 450 if the material is genuinely abrasive. With clean feed and lower impact energy, brittleness is much less of a threat, so you cash in the extra wear life.
- Smaller-horsepower machines: AR400 / Hardox 400 is the cost-effective default. Step up to AR450 / Hardox 450 only when the material is abrasive enough to justify the premium and the machine is not violent enough to crack it.
Wear life vs. cost: think in cost per ton
The sticker price on the plate is the wrong number to optimize. What you care about is cost per ton of finished product, and that has two failure modes:
- Buy too soft and abrasion wears the holes open early — you are back to oversized product and a screen change.
- Buy too hard for the machine and it cracks — and a cracked screen is worse than a worn one, because it fails suddenly, mid-job, and can throw material or damage the chamber.
The longest-lasting screen is the hardest one your machine and your feed will not break. Match the steel to the impact energy and the contamination first, then push hardness as far as that ceiling allows.
