Compost turner vs. turning with a loader: which one actually pays?
If you're moving less than about 5,000 cubic yards of compost a year, a loader you already own is usually the right call. Past that, a dedicated windrow turner turns faster, mixes better, and makes a more consistent product — and the math starts to favor buying one. Here's how to tell which side of that line you're on.
What each method actually does to the pile
A front-end loader or skid steer turns compost by scooping and dumping. It works, but it mostly relocates material — the outside of the pile stays on the outside, and you never get a clean cross-section mix. That matters because the microbes doing the composting need oxygen, and the edges of a windrow behave differently than the core. Uneven mixing means uneven decomposition, cold spots, and inconsistent moisture.
A dedicated turner drives over or alongside the windrow and runs a rotating drum with paddles or flails through the entire cross-section. Every pass fluffs the whole pile, folds the outside into the core, and injects air uniformly. That's the real difference: it's not just faster turning, it's better turning. If you're composting under a permit, uniform aeration is also what gets you consistent thermophilic temperatures — the sustained heat that satisfies PFRP (Process to Further Reduce Pathogens) requirements. A loader has a hard time hitting those temperatures evenly across a large pile.
Throughput: where the gap gets wide
The throughput difference is dramatic once you scale up.
- Loader turning: realistically a few hundred cubic yards per hour, and that number drops as pile height grows because you're making more passes.
- Tow-behind / PTO turner: roughly 1,000–3,000 cubic yards per hour depending on drum width and tractor power.
- Large self-propelled turner: 3,000–5,000+ cubic yards per hour in a single pass.
A loader also caps your windrow size. You can only reach so high and wide before it's impractical — figure 6–8 feet tall. A dedicated turner is built around a windrow profile, often 8 feet tall or more and up to 16–20 feet wide. Bigger windrows on the same pad means more throughput from the same footprint, which is a real advantage if land is your constraint.
Cost per turn — the number that decides it
Buying a turner is a capital decision, so it comes down to cost per turn over the volume you actually run.
A loader looks cheap because you already own it, but every turn ties up an operator and burns fuel while moving material inefficiently. A dedicated turner costs more up front but turns a given windrow in a fraction of the time and labor. Run enough yards and the per-turn cost on the turner drops well below the loader — that crossover is why high-volume yards almost always own a turner.
The rough guideposts:
- Under ~5,000 yd³/year: stick with the loader. The capital cost won't pencil.
- ~5,000–10,000 yd³/year: this is the gray zone. A used tow-behind turner is often the smartest first machine — low six figures or less, and it dramatically cuts your turn time without a self-propelled machine's price tag.
- Above ~10,000 yd³/year: a dedicated turner isn't a luxury, it's how you keep up.
When the loader is still the right answer
Don't buy a turner just because it's the "real" equipment. A loader wins when your volume is genuinely low, when you're seasonal, or when you need one flexible machine that also loads trucks, feeds a screen, and builds windrows. Many small operations run a loader for years and do fine — the finished product just needs a good final screening pass to clean it up before it goes to market.
The mistake is the opposite: a growing yard that keeps white-knuckling a loader through 15,000 yards a year because the turner feels expensive. At that point the loader is the expensive option — you're paying in labor hours, fuel, slower cycle times, and a less consistent product you can't charge a premium for.
