How to Sell Used Material Processing Equipment: Consignment vs. Auction vs. Dealer vs. Private Sale

Consignment, auction, dealer trade, or private sale? Compare the four ways to sell a used crusher, screener, or grinder — and which nets you the most money.

Selling a used crusher, screener, or grinder is nothing like selling a pickup truck. These are six-figure, low-volume machines with a small pool of qualified buyers, high freight costs, and real due-diligence on both sides. How you choose to sell has a bigger impact on your net proceeds than almost any other decision. Here are the four routes, and where each one actually makes sense.

1. Consignment through a broker

With consignment, the machine stays in your yard and keeps working while a broker markets it, screens buyers, and coordinates the sale. You set the price, the broker earns a fee only when it closes, and there's no up-front cost.

Best for: owners who want the highest net price without babysitting the sale. A good broker already has the buyer relationships, the marketplace placements (MachineryTrader, Machinio, Facebook groups), and the process to qualify buyers on financing and freight before they ever waste your time.

The trade-off: it's not instant. A fairly-priced machine typically moves in weeks, not days — but it moves at retail, not wholesale.

2. Auction

Auctions (Ritchie Bros., IronPlanet, Purple Wave, and the online houses) convert equipment to cash on a fixed date. That certainty is the whole value proposition.

Best for: sellers who need a hard deadline — a fleet liquidation, a lease return, a bank-driven sale, or a machine you simply want gone by month-end.

The trade-off: you surrender price control. Auctions clear at wholesale, commissions and listing fees stack up, and a slow-attendance day on a niche machine can leave real money on the table. A crusher that would consign at $180K might hammer at $130K.

3. Dealer trade-in or outright dealer purchase

A dealer buys the machine (or takes it on trade) at a wholesale number that leaves them room to resell.

Best for: speed and simplicity when you're buying your next machine from that same dealer and want one clean transaction.

The trade-off: it's the lowest price of the four. You're paying for convenience with margin the dealer keeps.

4. Private sale (you sell it yourself)

You list it, field the calls, and manage everything yourself.

Best for: owners with the time, a known buyer already in hand, or a low-value unit where a broker fee doesn't pencil.

The trade-off: it's a real job. You'll screen tire-kickers, chase financing that falls through, answer the same spec questions ten times, and coordinate freight and payment security yourself — often across state lines with a buyer you've never met. The scam risk on high-dollar equipment is not theoretical.

How to actually choose

Ask two questions: How fast do I need it gone, and how much price am I willing to trade for that speed?

  • Need it gone on a date, price secondary → auction
  • Want the most money and can wait weeks → consignment
  • Buying your next machine anyway → dealer trade
  • Have the time and a buyer lined up → private sale

For most owners of material processing equipment — crushers, screeners, grinders, conveyors — consignment hits the best balance: retail pricing, no up-front cost, and someone else handling the buyer screening, financing, and freight logistics that make these deals painful to run solo.

That's exactly the model we run at RPG Equipment. Your machine stays with you and keeps earning; we market it across every channel that matters, qualify the buyers, and coordinate inspection, financing, and transport through close. No inventory markup, and the fee is only earned when it sells.
